Pair of Petite French Painted Bookcases, Early 20th Century - 61" x 54"

A charming pair of petite French painted walnut bookcases, dating from the early 20th century and inspired by the Louis XV style. Each bookcase has a balanced three-part design, with a wide central bay flanked by two narrower arched compartments. Adjustable shelving is combined with a pair of small drawers and a shaped central cupboard door below, all resting above a serpentine apron carved with rocaille and foliate detail. 

They retain a beautifully layered painted finish in soft celadon green with a warm cream interior, creating a gently weathered surface rich in character. The lower cupboard doors have a slight movement when handled, which is characteristic of their traditional frame-and-panel construction and entirely normal. 

Their compact proportions make them remarkably versatile, offering generous storage without dominating a room. Beautiful displayed as a pair flanking a sofa, fireplace, or bed, they create a balanced, symmetrical composition.
