A highly unusual pair of Cévennes trunk beehives dating from the early to mid-20th century, beautifully illustrating the meeting point between rural utility and folk art. Similar in form but differing slightly in size, they were not originally conceived as a matched pair. Hollowed from sections of chestnut trunk and topped with traditional stone slab roofs, they retain their original internal crosspieces together with a remarkable series of old iron and sheet-metal repairs accumulated over decades of use, remaining in service until relatively recently. The weathered wood, oxidised metal, and lichen-softened stone create a rich palette of silvery greys, warm browns, and earthy tones, while the stone roofs catch the light with subtle mica-like glints. Together, these elements give the pair a sculptural presence that feels both primitive and sophisticated.
Traditional trunk hives were once a familiar sight throughout the Cévennes, where chestnut forests provided an abundant and naturally durable material for beekeeping. Protected by heavy stone roofs and repaired rather than replaced, these working objects evolved over time, each intervention adding another layer to their history. The resulting forms possess an authenticity and visual strength that transcend their original purpose, transforming practical agricultural objects into compelling examples of vernacular craftsmanship.
Today, these hives lend themselves beautifully to decorative reuse. Their substantial forms make striking side tables, bedside tables, or pedestals for a sculpture, plant, or ceramic vessel. Equally effective indoors or in a covered outdoor setting, they bring texture, history, and a strong connection to the rural landscape of southern France. Their unusual silhouettes, weathered surfaces, and accumulated repairs give them a character that sits comfortably between folk art, rustic design, and sculptural object.
