With their lively curves and rich gilding, this pair of four-light gilt bronze wall sconces, dating to the late 19th century, recalls the exuberant rococo style of the 18th century. Each backplate unfolds in asymmetrical C- and S-scrolls, issuing four graceful arms adorned with crisp acanthus leaves. The candle cups are finely chased and rest above leaf-shaped drip pans with serrated edges, later fitted with cream sleeves and bulbs for electrification. The gilding has softened to a warm, mellow tone, with areas of rubbing and gentle oxidation that speak to their age, while one arm is secured at the junction by a screw with an old repair discreetly visible.
These wall lights follow 18th-century rococo models, where foliage, playful asymmetry, and sculptural movement defined the style. Revived in the 19th century and later adapted for electricity, they preserve the theatrical play of light across their gilded surfaces while suiting modern use.
As a pair, these sconces frame a mantel, pier mirror, or doorway with elegant symmetry, bringing warmth and sculptural presence to a dining room, entryway, or gallery wall. Their lively foliate scrolls harmonize with paneled rooms and antique giltwood, yet they also punctuate a pared-back contemporary space with a refined historical accent.
