Pair of Sculptural French Rococo Silver-Plated Four-Light Candelabra, Early 20th Century - 18½"

A handsome pair of French silver-plated four-light candelabra dating from the early 20th century, designed in the Louis XV Rococo taste. Each stands on a shaped rocaille base that rises in a graceful twisting movement into an elegant baluster stem, from which three deeply scrolling arms richly adorned with curling leaves unfurl around a taller central light. The candleholders emerge as stylized leafy blooms above ruffled leaf-form drip pans, continuing the exuberant botanical theme. The fluid curves and richly sculpted ornament create a striking sense of movement. The softly aged silvered finish has mellowed to a warm, luminous sheen. The underside bears a very lightly impressed maker's mark, now difficult to read. Light, even surface wear and gentle rubbing to the silvered finish have created a beautifully mellow patina, lending the pair an evocative sense of age. One of the pair displays a very slight lean, barely noticeable amid the dynamic movement of the design.
