A commanding matched pair of glazed earthenware jardinière columns, attributed to the Massier ateliers of Vallauris and dating to the late 19th century, presents a richly sculptural and expressive presence. Each column features a deep gadrooned urn with a rolled rim set on a swelling collar above an organic pedestal modeled with undulating, tree-like contours enlivened by relief floral motifs with flowing stems. The saturated Mediterranean turquoise glaze drapes fluidly over the forms, with subtle aubergine tones pooling gracefully at the base. Grand in scale and architectural in character, the pair corresponds to a recorded Massier model, although these examples remain unsigned. Condition appears very good, with light scuffing, minor glaze imperfections, occasional firing specks, and subtle crazing, all consistent with late-19th-century Massier ceramics and visually harmonious with the saturated glaze.
The pair embodies the Vallauris tradition of faïence and barbotine perfected by the Massier family, whose savoir-faire in vivid copper-oxide blues and rich lead glazes helped shape French Art Nouveau ceramics. The flowing pedestals evoke tree trunks and water, a naturalistic vocabulary characteristic of the 1890s. Large jardinière-on-pedestal compositions were designed for conservatories, winter gardens, and formal entrances, often produced as pairs. While unmarked, the profile and glaze align with repertorié models from the Massier workshops and their celebrated Côte d’Azur palette.
Ideal to frame architecture, they bring presence on either side of a staircase or a wide doorway. In an entry hall, sunroom, or covered loggia, they can cradle ferns, palms, or trailing ivy, or stand empty as sculptural color notes. The vivid turquoise glaze pairs beautifully with pale stone, checkerboard floors, patinated bronze, and wicker, and it introduces a playful Mediterranean brightness that lifts a room with unexpected charm.
