A pair of Swiss-made Etter kirsch carafes from Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter's farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine — and they arrived, Patricia explains, "during the height of my cherry obsession." That obsession had a very specific origin: when Patricia and Walter first bought Chanteduc, seven ancient cherry trees came with the property. Patricia became, as she puts it, Madame Cerise — pillows, posters, clothing, earrings, anything bearing a cherry found its way home. Each slender, upright bottle is clear blown glass, clean and precise, with a delicate glass sculpture of two cherries on a slender stem suspended inside — sealed with a natural cork topped in red wax. The cherries float within the glass like a still life, visible from every angle: a glassblower's small tour de force. Etter is a respected Swiss distillery with a long tradition of fruit spirits, and kirsch — cherry eau-de-vie — is their signature. These bottles are exactly what you'd expect from that tradition: functional, beautifully made and unmistakably purposeful. Display them on a kitchen shelf grouped with other fruit-themed pieces, or use them as they were intended — to serve kirsch after dinner. Either way, they carry a story rooted in the Provençal landscape and in the particular joy Patricia brought to collecting: nothing precious for its own sake, but everything chosen because it meant something.
