A handsome pair of late 17th-century pricket candlesticks, likely French or Italian, hand-carved and turned in wood and retaining what appears to be their original painted finish. The surface is particularly compelling: a deep yellow-green with an almost lacquer-like gloss, worn through in places to reveal warmer reddish-brown layers beneath. Their tall, articulated stems combine turned moldings with carved foliate sections, while the bases are especially distinctive, formed as broad sculptural leaves descending onto three small feet. Age-related rubbing, losses and surface wear are visible throughout, giving the pair considerable depth and texture. One candlestick leans slightly from the vertical, an irregularity that is more or less noticeable depending on the viewing angle, and one pricket has a broken tip.

Tall pricket candlesticks of this type were made to hold substantial candles and were used in ecclesiastical and ceremonial interiors, where their height and strong silhouette allowed candlelight to be raised prominently within a room. During the later 17th century, turned architectural profiles were often combined with increasingly expressive carved ornament. This pair is particularly appealing for the contrast between the disciplined rhythm of the stems and the more unusual, almost organic treatment of the bases.

Displayed together, they bring height, symmetry and a strong sculptural presence to an interior. Their deeply worn yellow-green surface is especially atmospheric, introducing a subtle touch of color, while the carved bases give them an unexpected individuality. Fitted with tall beeswax candles, they take on a more ceremonial presence and beautifully emphasize their elongated proportions; left without candles, their carved silhouettes remain equally compelling as sculptural objects. They would work equally well flanking a console, fireplace or doorway, or in a more layered interior, where their age, color and pronounced forms would feel entirely at home.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
