A charming pair of French metal bistro chairs dating from the 1920s–30s, inspired by the iconic curved lines of Thonet bentwood seating and adapted here in metal. Produced during a period when advances in metalworking accelerated following the First World War, these chairs reflect the growing popularity of lightweight yet durable metal furniture for cafés, terraces, and gardens. Their looping backs recall the familiar silhouette of bentwood café chairs, while the perforated metal seats, subtly evoking traditional canework, were designed to allow rainwater to drain, making them particularly well suited to outdoor use.
The pale painted finish has acquired a naturally weathered patina over time, with areas of surface wear, oxidation, and rust traces creating a beautifully nuanced surface shaped by time and exposure. Layers of older paint become visible where the upper surface has worn away, creating subtle tonal variations and lending the chairs a richly textured quality. One chair has a slightly bent leg, making it a little more wobbly than the other, though both remain stable and fully usable.
Full of outdoor charm and classic bistro character, they would work beautifully in a kitchen, winter garden, covered terrace, or café-inspired interior, bringing with them the atmosphere of old French cafés and sunlit village squares.
