Pair of Vintage French Cast-Stone Reclining Garden Lion Statues - 23¾" long

This pair of French cast-stone garden lions likely dates from the mid-20th century and combines a noble classical subject with a surprisingly relaxed character. Designed as an opposing pair, each lion reclines with its forepaws extended, the body settling naturally behind a finely modeled head framed by a deeply carved mane. The faces are especially expressive, combining a noble, almost heraldic quality with a calm, relaxed look that softens the formality of the subject. Both remain in very good condition, with no visible losses. Their surfaces have weathered differently over time, suggesting uneven outdoor exposure: one retains a paler, chalkier appearance, while the other is more deeply mottled with gray, black and earthy deposits. Moss and lichen remain in places, adding depth and individuality to the pair.

Lions have long been used architecturally as symbols of strength and guardianship, particularly at entrances, on gate piers or framing steps.
