This intriguing majolica wall plaque with an aquatic motif, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, draws on the tradition of Bernard Palissy’s celebrated works of the French Renaissance. A sinuous snake coils across the center, encircled by a ring of textured ground, while shells, reeds, and aquatic foliage are arranged in high relief around the border. The palette blends ochre, olive, and moss green with touches of brown, the glossy glaze pooling in recesses and glistening across raised forms. The plaque is unmarked and pierced with two small holes for hanging. Its surface carries the marks of age, with rim chips, scattered glaze losses, surface crazing, and gentle wear to the high points. The design follows the tradition established by Bernard Palissy (1510–1590), the French Renaissance potter celebrated for his _rustique_ creations: dishes, basins, and plaques alive with lizards, snakes, frogs, shells, and riverbank plants modeled in naturalistic relief. His works, both decorative and didactic, reflected a fascination with the natural world and were admired as much for their theatricality as for their scientific curiosity. From the Second Empire through the Belle Époque, French workshops revived his style, producing majolica and glazed earthenware that carried forward this union of natural history, artistry, and spectacle. This plaque lends depth and texture to a wall, its shifting glazes catching the light as if the subject were alive. It hangs beautifully above a mantel, in a garden room, or as a focal point in a library, where its naturalistic relief evokes the spirit of a cabinet of curiosities. In dialogue with majolica, botanical prints, and patinated metals, it brings a note of theatricality and natural wonder. Grouped with other Palissy-style works, it builds into a richly layered, nature-inspired tableau with a palpable sense of history and curiosity.
