Petit 1950s 'conscience' water jug - yellow w/ rope

SKU: 17044

US$254
A charming, petit 1950s glazed terracotta 'conscience' jug from southwest France with its original rope cord. The exterior features a lovely yellow glaze and it has loops along each side for threading through rope for easy transportation. Holding an intriguing history, conscience jugs were originally used to collect olive oil for the poor after the olive harvest by the church, carried by priests. After olive oil donations were given, the priest would then bless the donor's conscience. Today this makes a delightful piece to display in a collection of French pottery.
