This petite 18th-century French Biot jar is hand-thrown in terracotta, its gracefully rounded, bulbous body rising to a short neck and wide flared collar with a softly rolled rim. The exterior remains unglazed, showing warm taupe and ochre tones beneath a chalky patina enriched by mineral accretions and scattered abrasions. Traces of pale slip and glaze linger around the mouth, although much of the neck glazing has disappeared. The base is not pierced, preserving its original function, and the terracotta body survives without major damage, its surface beautifully weathered by time.
Produced in the potters’ village of Biot near Antibes, these jars were a hallmark of Provençal craftsmanship from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Their swelling bellies maximized storage capacity, while the narrow foot allowed the vessel to be set into the earth to help keep contents cool. Interiors were lightly glazed to resist oil and brine, and the broad collar made lifting and lashing easier during transport. The survival of an unpierced base confirms that this example was never adapted later as a planter, retaining the authenticity of a true storage jar used historically for olive oil and household provisions.
This smaller-scale example is especially appealing for its rarity, charm, and graceful proportions. It reads as a sculptural accent, whether placed on a console, center table, or stone plinth, or displayed in a kitchen or garden room where its rustic surface introduces Provençal warmth. It can stand alone as an object, or be styled with dried branches, olive cuttings, or reeds, pairing naturally with limestone, bleached woods, and linen for an understated, textural note.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
