A charming petite 19th-century black marble mortar and pestle set, carved from richly toned stone with a thick rolled rim, broad basin, and shallow foot. The marble shows a deep jet tone with soft natural clouding, scattered white inclusions, and a mellow sheen developed through years of handling.
The pestle is particularly handsome, carved from richly variegated black marble dramatically streaked with crystalline white veining that gives the stone.
The mortar has a soft matte finish, a pleasing density in the hand, and a raw, stone-textured interior with visible concentric turning marks, creating a striking contrast with the softly polished exterior. These rings suggest the bowl was shaped on a lathe or early mechanical wheel, then intentionally left with a slightly abrasive working surface to better grip and crush ingredients. Together, these details give the piece an honest utilitarian character.
Today, this petite set remains fully functional while also serving as a sculptural decorative accent, its dark tone pairing beautifully with antique kitchen wares, brass, and ceramics. It also makes a pleasing addition to a collection of antique mortars and apothecary objects.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
