Petite 19th-Century French Biot Terracotta Jar - 22½"

A petite 19th-century Biot jar with the characteristic proportions of the period, combining a generously rounded, bulbous body with a broad, deeply rolled rim. The pale terracotta surface has developed a beautifully weathered patina in soft stone and earthy gray tones, while remnants of warm ochre glaze remain around the mouth and upper shoulder. Areas of rubbing, glaze loss, and surface irregularity are consistent with age and long use, and give the jar a particularly authentic, tactile character.

Biot was one of Provence’s great centers of jar production, supplying large quantities of storage vessels from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Made principally for olive oil and other provisions, these jars became closely associated with the material culture of Provence, their generous forms and thick rolled rims varying subtly according to period and workshop.

Its smaller scale makes this example especially easy to place while retaining the unmistakable presence of an old Biot jar. Left empty or filled with dried grasses, branches, or flowers, its rounded silhouette and softly worn surface bring warmth, texture, and a distinctly Provençal character to an interior.
