This petite giltwood mirror carries a quiet, atmospheric glow, its carved and gessoed frame defined by a bold rope-twist surround accented with small floral corner rosettes. The gilding has mellowed to a softly burnished, muted gold, with areas of gentle wear and minor gesso losses that speak to age and authenticity.
Retaining beautifully foxed mercury glass, with the typical sparkle of mercury panes and areas of desilvering that read as atmospheric. More evocative than reflective, the mirror is not functional for clear viewing, intended instead for atmosphere and character.
It brings depth and a gentle antiqued shimmer to a wall.
Hang it above a console, layer it within a gallery arrangement, or place it near candlelight where the silvering softly flickers. It suits smaller spaces such as a vestibule or powder room and can also be leaned on a mantel or shelf to add texture to a vignette. The overall effect is intimate and restrained, introducing history without overwhelming the room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
This mirror contains its original mercury glass which sparkles beautifully in the light. The technique of making mercury glass mirrors was retired in the early 1900s. The mercury is fixed behind the glass in a solidified, non harmful state.
