Petite Alsatian Folk Art Painted Armoire - 71¼" x 58¾"

This charming early 20th-century Alsatian softwood armoire is a wonderful example of regional folk art. Modestly proportioned, it combines whimsical painted decoration with an honest, entirely handcrafted construction. The façade is enlivened by panels that reinterpret Rococo ornament through the lens of regional folk art. Rendered in soft pinks, creams, and ochers, the scrolling cartouches are framed by a gently undulating pediment and echoed by painted motifs on the sides. Every detail reflects its bespoke origins, from the slightly irregular construction to the thoughtfully arranged interior, giving the piece exceptional warmth and individuality.

Designed in two interlocking halves secured with large wooden keys, the armoire can be dismantled for transport, a practical feature in Alpine regions. The left-hand section is fitted with shelves, a small drawer, and storage compartments, while the right provides hanging space with its original pegs and upper shelf, together with a later-added clothes rail. A removable false floor on the right conceals a charming secret compartment. The left door is secured by two original metal hooks, while the right retains its working lock and key.  As expected of a handcrafted country piece, the armoire remains perfectly functional but is best suited to occasional rather than heavy everyday use. The doors, lock, and fittings require a gentle hand, and the slightly irregular construction is entirely consistent with its handmade origins.

Its modest proportions make it particularly well suited to a guest room, children's bedroom, entrance hall, or mudroom, where it provides charming occasional storage while bringing warmth, color, and authentic country character to the space.
