This petite antique earthenware pot has a gently rounded, slightly tapered shape and a beautiful creamy-white glaze, covered in a fine network of crazing that has developed a lovely aged patina. Its original domed lid is topped with a small rounded knob and features an ingenious twist-lock mechanism, allowing it to turn beneath two overhanging sections of the rim to hold it securely in place. Although its original purpose is unknown, this careful design suggests it may have been intended to protect small quantities of something valuable, perhaps spices or medicinal preparations. Small chips around the lid and rim, together with darker age marks and glaze wear, reflect its long history.
The simplicity of its shape and the beautifully crackled surface give this little pot an almost antiquarian charm. Its clever lid adds an intriguing practical detail to an otherwise modest object. It would look lovely on a kitchen shelf among antique pottery, on a bedside table holding small keepsakes, or displayed in a cabinet of curiosities.
Two similar pots are also available here and here, each with its own charming variations, all three forming a harmonious grouping.
