A contemporary grog-tempered terracotta torso by Provence-based sculptor Michel Cayla, conceived in the spirit of an archaeological relic. The sand-toned male nude appears in a deliberately incomplete form, its fragmentary silhouette both restrained and expressive. Mounted on a dark metal stand and bearing the artist’s studio mark to the reverse, the piece reads as a sculptural study that balances classical reference with a modern line.
Hand-built using clay enriched with coarse aggregate, the surface achieves a stone-like density with sharply irregular edges. Subtle tooling and controlled abrasion articulate the form with quiet intensity, suggesting musculature and traces of drapery. Working in southern France, Cayla draws on the enduring language of classical statuary, reinterpreting it through a tactile, contemporary lens.
The piece brings texture and a sense of time to an interior, its surface particularly animated when placed under directional light on a console, bookshelf, or mantel.
