This petite framed work depicts three dancing figures arranged within an oval border and is executed in cut paper, a decorative art form that experienced a lively revival in the early twentieth century. Likely dating from the 1920s or 1930s, the sharply cut black silhouettes stand out crisply against a warm, softly toned ground, subtly animated by touches of hand applied color. The dancers strike rhythmic, animated poses, their costumes defined by ruffled skirts, fitted bodices, and expressive headpieces that heighten the theatrical sense of movement and whimsy.
Unsigned, the piece closely recalls the style of Eva Schönberg, the German artist celebrated for her playful and graphic cut paper scenes of dancers and performers from this period. Light age marks and gentle spotting across the paper add to its authentic period character.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
