A rare charming petite French Directoire painted and gilt mirror dating from the late 18th century. The architectural frame is crowned by a shallow cornice and flanked by spiral-fluted columns resting on projecting plinths. The upper frieze is decorated with a classical urn flanked by opposing lions, while a laurel branch and rosette ornament enrich the lower rail. The soft ivory-painted ground, warm gilding, and glimpses of red bole create a beautifully layered surface.
Inspired by the classical ideals of the Directoire period, the design draws on Greek and Roman motifs associated with strength, virtue, and refinement. Its balanced proportions and architectural details give the mirror an understated elegance that remains timeless.
The mirror retains its original mercury glass plate, now richly patinated with extensive foxing that lends depth and atmosphere. The frame shows expected wear, including rubbing to the paint and gilding, together with minor chips and losses consistent with age.
Its petite scale makes it wonderfully versatile, whether hung in an entryway, powder room, or above a small chest or mantel. Rich in character and history, it brings warmth, texture, and quiet elegance to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
