A petite French bulldog figure from the early 20th century, cast in metal with a dark bronzed patina and mounted on a circular green marble base with natural veining. The dog sits upright with alert ears and compact paws, its modelling softly rounded and characterfully stout, resting on a small cushion. The surface shows light rubs and minor oxidation, while the marble has faint edge nibbles and faint traces of old adhesive where the sculpture rests on the base. The simplified silhouette and upright pose capture the breed’s unmistakable character while reflecting the period’s taste for charming, expressive animal figures. Unsigned, as is often the case with small decorative metal figures created for the decorative arts market.
French enthusiasm for the Bouledogue Français flourished from the Belle Époque into the early 20th century, when the breed became a fashionable companion in Parisian life. Its distinctive silhouette appeared widely in visual culture and decorative arts, from paintings and posters to cane handles and small bronzed figures.
This small sculpture sits beautifully on a stack of books, a desk, or an entry console, serving as a characterful paperweight or a quiet decorative accent.
