A delightful petite French tobacco jar dating from the early 20th century, crafted in warm honey-ochre glazed earthenware. The relief-moulded decoration features playful putti among foliage and animals, symbolizing nature’s abundance. The domed lid is topped with a charming rabbit finial surrounded by softly modelled leaves, while the rounded baluster body is fitted with small scalloped lug handles to the sides. Traces of an unreadable stamp remain on the underside of the base. In good, timeworn condition with a hairline to one handle, minor glaze losses to the interior, a few small chips and flakes to the lid and finial, all consistent with age and use.
A piece full of character and whimsy. This jar brings a mellow, rustic warmth to a room. It sits beautifully on a library shelf or gentleman’s desk for storing matches or small accessories, or anchors a kitchen vignette with copper and stoneware. Pair it with green-glazed faïence and wicker for a country French tableau, or let the rabbit finial punctuate a curated display of curiosities on a console or mantel.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
