A charming petite cast metal figure of a dog holding a wire market basket in its mouth, set upon a circular base. The dog is finely modeled with softly curled fur and an alert, expressive gaze, finished in a dark patina that contrasts beautifully with the warm glow of the basket, delicately worked in brass wire. Lightweight and graceful, the basket could cradle a favorite piece of jewelry, a small keepsake, or even a single flower. The piece shows gentle rubbing and minor surface wear to the patina, along with a slight, pleasing waviness to the basket rim consistent with age and handling.

This charming object reflects the French animalier tradition, popular from the mid-19th century when small sculptural bronzes enlivened salons, dressing tables, and writing desks. Parisian foundries produced such accessories in bronze and spelter, celebrating familiar animals with wit and craftsmanship. The form likely served as a small desk catchall or match holder, illustrating the Belle Époque taste for decorative objects in which utility was gracefully paired with poetic charm.

Like a loyal little companion for the desk or nightstand, the dog waits patiently with its basket, ready to cradle a favorite jewel or a single flower.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
