A petite Sarreguemines Terre de Fer (ironstone) lidded terrine, c. 1920, Patricia and Walter Wells’s apartment in Paris. The oval ironstone pot wears a warm cream glaze, with small strap handles and a crouching rabbit finial that nods to its traditional contents. Patricia connects it to her teaching with characteristic candor and humor: “This one is more for display. I used to put rabbit on the menu, but so many students didn’t like to cook rabbit, so it came off the menu.” She adds, “Many rabbits’ lives were spared.” From the personal collection of an internationally respected culinary figure, it carries the spirit of French kitchens and the clear-eyed simplicity that defines her work.
