This charming small French mirror, dating from the early 19th century, has a restrained and elegant Neoclassical design in painted and gilded wood. Two gilded spiral columns frame the rectangular mirror plate, topped with palmette ornaments and finished with small ball finials below. The carved upper frieze is particularly elegant, with two lions facing a classical urn, all worked in raised relief against a muted olive-green ground. A delicate ornament combining a mascaron and palmettes decorates the lower rail, completing the composition. The contrast between the mellow gilding and aged green paint is especially beautiful, with glimpses of warm reddish bole showing through in places. Fine craquelure, gentle rubbing and small losses contribute to its rich antique patina. The mirror plate remains relatively clear, with scattered spots and areas of desilvering that soften the reflection without obscuring it.
Despite its small proportions, this mirror has plenty of decorative presence. The combination of twisted columns, classical motifs and beautifully aged colors gives it a character that is both formal and charming. The combination of muted olive-green paint and mellow gilding is particularly chic and beautifully suited to its Neoclassical design, while the timeworn gilding and softly aged mirror plate bring a warmth and intimacy that make it especially appealing above a narrow entryway console, a small washbasin in a powder room or beside a bed.
