Delightful Petite French Pedestal Table w/ Reverse-Painted Mirrored Glass Top - 30" x 18"

This delightful small French occasional table combines a circular reverse-painted and silvered glass top with an elegant black-painted cast-iron base. The top depicts a fashionable couple exchanging a gallant greeting, with the date 1830 inscribed beneath the figures, maybe referring to the period of their costumes rather than necessarily dating the table itself. Delicate gilded scrollwork surrounds the scene, framed by a narrow brass rim. The slender base features gracefully curved supports, a circular stretcher and touches of gilding. It is possible that the top and base were brought together at a later date, although their precise history remains uncertain. The painting and silvering have worn away in places, with numerous scratches across the surface, but the scene remains clearly recognizable and beautifully evocative. The faded decoration has a particularly nostalgic quality, with the elegantly dressed figures emerging from the aged mirrored surface. The contrast between the delicate illustration, gilded details and sculptural ironwork gives the table an unusual and very personal character. Placed beside an armchair, in an entrance hall or among a collection of antique furniture, it would bring a touch of romantic whimsy and French decorative charm. Although its precise origins remain uncertain, it is a truly distinctive piece, full of character and particularly appealing in a thoughtfully collected interior.
