A petite covered sugar bowl by Ercuis, France, mid-20th century. In silver plate, the bright, pot-bellied body rises to a domed lid with a ribbed knop finial, while crisp gadrooned bands encircle the lid edge and foot. Twin scrolled handles terminate in delicate shell motifs, lending classical poise to its well-proportioned silhouette. The silvered surfaces show a gentle, inviting sheen. Condition is very good, with light surface wear, fine polishing marks, and subtle age-darkening in the recesses that reflect careful use.
Founded in 1867 in the village of Ercuis in northern France, the firm became renowned for refined silver-plated hollowware supplied to grand hotels and ocean liners. This example reflects the workshop’s traditional techniques, from precisely formed gadrooning to hand-finished handles, all plated over a durable base metal for lasting service.
Equally at home in a contemporary setting or a Provençal kitchen, it adds a quiet sparkle to a breakfast tableau beside linen and faience. Use it traditionally for sugar, or repurpose it for violet pastilles, honey, or bath salts on a vanity. Its small-scale elegance lifts a bar cart or console vignette with an authentic French note.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
