Petite Late 18th Century Italian Rocaille Giltwood Mirror - 12¼" x 10¾"

A petite late 18th-century Italian rocaille giltwood mirror frame, now fitted with a later mirror plate. Cartouche-shaped and richly animated, the softwood frame is carved with scrolling C- and S-shaped volutes. The original gilded surface survives in richly varied tones, with brighter gold passages set against softer, matte areas where the bole, gesso, and traces of the underlying wood are revealed, giving the ornament depth and vibration. The mirror plate is a replacement and the frame has lost its original back. Timeworn, with losses and rubbing; it remains stable and highly decorative.

Compact and easy to place, its petite scale makes it particularly appealing, lending an intimate decorative note to smaller settings such as above a nightstand in a bedroom or in a powder room, where it remains functional, or layered into a gallery wall.  The worn gilding, with its nuanced tones and visible layers, speaks to its age and history, bringing a sense of charm and quiet refinement.
