This French Louis XVI style desk or music armchair, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, features a graceful horseshoe back and circular seat, both finely caned and set within a carved beechwood frame with a beautifully timeworn gilt finish. The top rail is padded and upholstered in floral tapestry, secured with brass nailhead trim, while the downswept arms end in acanthus scrolls above fluted supports. The apron frieze displays a rais de cœur band with corner rosettes, and the chair rests on four elegant, tapering fluted legs. The caning has been restored and remains in very good condition with light, even wear. A posterior repair and added support to one leg are visible beneath the frame, providing additional strength.
The form draws on the late 18th-century neoclassical vocabulary that defined Louis XVI seating, notably the disciplined geometry of the fluted legs, the rosette paterae, and the clean oval of the seat. Such bureau armchairs were devised for use at a writing table, with caning chosen for ventilation and lightness during long hours at the desk. While 18th-century Parisian chairs sometimes incorporated elaborate swivels, this early 20th-century interpretation is deliberately fixed, illustrating how Belle Époque makers simplified Ancien Régime models for modern interiors, yet preserved their stylistic elegance and fine detailing.
This petite yet comfortable chair is well-suited to a writing desk in a study or library, a dressing table in a bedroom, or as a refined perch in an entry hall. Its airy caning and restrained carving complement both a neoclassical console and a light-toned modern desk, while the upholstered top rail introduces a soft pattern that lends a subtle touch of color. Seat is 40cm wide internally.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
