This petite French naturalist stump-form vessel dates to the late 19th century. Cast in maillechort (nickel silver) and brass, it is modeled as a cut tree trunk with textured bark and topped by a finely detailed perched songbird. Within the trunk sits a small integrated cup forming the inner vessel. It moves slightly within the structure but remains fixed in place. The interior retains a warm gilt wash, while the exterior shows a deep brown patina with subtle olive tones. Gentle softening to the high points and light speckling consistent with age contribute to a rich, authentic antique patina.
The piece reflects the late nineteenth century French taste for naturalistic design, a decorative style inspired by close observation of plants and animals and rendered with lifelike texture and detail. Objects of this type were often used as match holders or pen pots on a writing desk, bringing a charming and effortless touch of nature indoors.
Equally suited to a desk holding pens or brushes, beside a mantel for matches, or on a nightstand with a small liner for fresh blooms,It brings a discreet but evocative touch of nature indoors.
