A petite late 19th century still life painted in oil on wood panel depicting a cast metal mortar and pestle beside a white glazed jug, with two well-thumbed books resting on a wooden ledge against a deep umber ground. The glossy glaze of the jug catches and reflects the surrounding tones, echoing the warm browns and siennas of the composition. The scene is bathed in a soft, warm light suggestive of late afternoon or lamplight, which gently models the forms and deepens the contrasts between the dark metal mortar, the worn bindings of the books, and the luminous surface of the jug. The smooth paint surface and restrained palette give the composition a quiet intimacy and a timeless, contemplative mood.

A hand painted dedication appears at the lower right above the signature reading “à l’ami Ch. Bonnard, cordialement,” meaning “to my friend Ch. Bonnard, sincerely.” The painting remains in good condition with gentle surface wear, including light craquelure in places. The work is currently presented in an early 20th century molded frame showing small nicks and light rubbing to the gilding.

Delicate and atmospheric, this work brings a mellow note to a kitchen wall, butler’s pantry, or dining room. Its earthy palette pairs effortlessly with copper, faïence and patinated wood, lending authentic texture to both country-house settings and pared-back contemporary spaces.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
