A petite figural tureen modeled as a crouching rabbit, crafted in glazed earthenware with a naturalistic hand-painted coat in soft greys, umber and cream. The detachable lid forms the upper body and ears, meeting a well-defined seam above the haunches, while the fur is rendered with fine brushed swirls and mottled washes. Glossy glaze throughout, the interior likely fully glazed for service. Condition is very good, with light surface wear to the glaze at high points and a minute nibble near the base, commensurate with age. Likely Continental European, mid 20th century.
Figural animal tureens have roots in 18th century faïence and later 19th century barbotine, when naturalistic table sculpture enlivened grand services and holiday buffets. This example reflects that tradition in a more intimate, mid-century interpretation, probably slip-cast and then hand detailed before a clear overglaze, a process that preserves crisp modeling while showing the artisan’s savoir-faire in the painterly coat. Comparable pieces were produced across France and Portugal, where Caldas da Rainha workshops and French majolica makers favored lifelike fauna for pâté and confectionery service, especially around Easter.
Charming on a spring table as a centerpiece filled with sweets, it also lends character to open kitchen shelving among faïence plates and wicker. On a console or entry table it serves as a graceful vide-poche for keys and small notes, and in a breakfast nook it becomes a whimsical covered dish for biscuits or tea sachets. Its subtle palette and gentle sheen pair well with linen, pale woods and cabbage ware for a relaxed, collected look.
