A lovely petite French pantry pot in glazed terracotta, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The handcrafted form features a rounded body tapering from a narrow base and rising to an everted rim. The surface is finished in a pale, straw-toned glaze, enlivened by green splashed and trailing decoration that creates a lively, mottled effect with a gentle sheen. The marbled green decoration is achieved by introducing copper oxides into the glaze, a technique typical of provincial pottery from the southwest and central regions of France. Subtle irregularities in the shape, along with visible speckling, firing pits, and a crackled patina, enhance its tactile, rustic charm.
Such vessels were used in rural kitchens to hold jam, honey or rendered fats, kept close at hand for daily cooking, and reflect a simple, enduring tradition of utilitarian pottery. Placed on a shelf, dresser, or windowsill, it brings a soft touch of colour and texture, and can also be used to hold dried herbs or small utensils.
