Poetic 19th Century Italian Carved Wood Urn Cachepot w/ Painted Decoration - 20½"

A poetic early 19th century Italian carved wood urn cachepot, sculptural and nicely proportioned. Hollowed and shaped by hand, the baluster body rises from a cylindrical plinth painted in deep green. The surface is finished in soft ochre tones with hand painted floral sprays in red and green, applied with a simple and expressive brush that gives the piece its gentle naïve charm. Carved volute shell handles project from each side, their lively forms clearly revealing the marks of the artisan’s tools. The broad rim is decorated with painted ornament that recalls the molded profiles of classical cast iron garden urns. 

The carving remains highly tactile, with subtle irregularities and visible tool work that speak to its handcrafted origin. The polychrome surface has developed a beautiful patina over time, the layered paint softening into warm earthy tones. Gentle wear, small losses, and age fissures in the wood attest to its long life and authentic character. A fitted zinc liner remains inside, allowing the piece to function as a planter or cachepot. Substantial yet graceful, this urn brings warmth and character to an interior. 

It works beautifully on a console, center table, or mantel filled with branches, herbs, or a small topiary. Left empty, it reads as a sculptural decorative object, its mellow colors and timeworn surface adding an authentic note of Italian country house charm.
