A striking Portuguese majolica wall charger, attributed to the workshop of José Alves Cunha in Caldas da Rainha and dating to the early to mid-20th century. Crafted in relief-molded glazed earthenware, the composition centers on a vividly modelled red crab resting on a sand-textured ground, surrounded by seaweed, mussels, and shells rendered in rich tones of cobalt blue, moss green, cream, and auburn. The glossy glazes and high-relief decoration create a lively sculptural effect, bringing the marine scene vividly to life. The reverse is stamped "Portugal" and pierced for wall hanging. Condition is very good, with light wear to the high points and minor firing irregularities consistent with its handmade nature.
Drawing inspiration from the celebrated Palissy wares of Renaissance France, potters in Caldas da Rainha developed a distinctive style characterized by richly modelled flora and fauna rendered in vibrant glazes and dramatic relief. This charger beautifully exemplifies that enduring tradition, combining theatrical modelling with lively maritime imagery.
Whether displayed on a kitchen or dining-room wall or as part of a collection of decorative ceramics, it brings color, texture, and a spirited coastal character to an interior.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
