Pretty antique pitcher from Savoy - Yellow w/ foliage motifs 7"

A stunning Savoyard terre vernissée pitcher of ovoid form with a short collar neck, gently undulating lip, and a pulled strap handle. The warm straw yellow glaze is hand painted with vertical stylized floral garlands in manganese black with copper green and iron red accents, and edged with a dark manganese line at the rim and along the handle. This vernissée pottery belongs to the French Alpine tradition of utilitarian earthenware made for everyday service at the table and hearth. 

Produced in village workshops across Savoie and Haute-Savoie, such pitchers were used for water, wine, or milk and exemplify provincial savoir-faire closely related to Dauphiné and Bresse folk ceramics, where decoration favored rhythmic sprigs and garlands over formal ornament.
