This evocative oil on canvas by Auguste Chabaud captures a Provençal landscape glistening in the aftermath of rain. A winding pale road curves through fields of ochre and stone, leading toward whitewashed farm buildings and tall, dark cypresses silhouetted against a shifting blue sky. In the foreground, a puddle reflects fragments of the trees and the sky above, lending the scene a lyrical depth and quiet atmosphere. The broad, sculptural brushwork and bold contrasts of color typify Chabaud’s mature style, anchored in Fauvist vigor yet deeply rooted in his native Provence. The painting is signed Chabaud at lower right and set in a patinated carved wood frame. Two small holes are visible in the lower portion of the canvas, without compromising its overall impact.
A central figure of early 20th-century Provençal modernism, Auguste Chabaud (1882–1955) blended the expressive freedom of Parisian avant-garde art with the contemplative stillness of rural life. Now celebrated in a museum dedicated to his work in Graveson, his paintings capture the raw beauty and mood of the southern landscape. This piece, with its suggestion of rain and renewal, brings a poetic and atmospheric presence to an interior, its reflections and deep blues harmonizing beautifully with natural light and earthy materials. A fine example of Chabaud's mature style and a lyrical tribute to Provence’s timeless landscape.
