An ocher glazed Provençal salad bowl from the kitchen at Chanteduc, Patricia Wells’ home in Provence. Handcrafted in ceramic with a warm honey ocher glaze, it shows a rhythmic fluted rim and a broad, shallow, generous form that sits comfortably in the hands. The glossy interior is punctuated by a deliberate, textured well, and gentle signs of use lend a friendly patina. From Patricia’s personal collection, it has the ease and purpose that define her table. This bowl is featured on p. 286 of Salad as a Meal, by Patricia Wells.
Patricia explains, “The scratched base is to grate garlic to prepare the vinaigrette directly in the bowl. I rest the greens on top and mix when we are ready to eat.” It grates ginger beautifully too. Sourced in Nyons at the Scourtinerie and made in Aubagne, a town with a respected ceramic tradition, this vintage piece reflects the intelligent simplicity she brings to cooking, teaching, and entertaining between Paris and Provence. Use it as intended for a salade verte (green salad), whisking the vinaigrette in the textured well before tossing the leaves, or let it anchor an open kitchen shelf where its sunny ocher color recalls the ocher of Provence. It is equally at home on a patio table for summer lunches.
