Rare 19th-century red-ochre glazed terracotta farm animal feeding jug - Drôme 13"

SKU: 17952

US$1,234

Dating from the nineteenth century, France, a superb and rare red-ochre glazed terracotta animal feeding jug. Likely once used to give milk to horses, for example, this piece can rest upright as pictured or on its side where the back is flattened for this purpose. A rope would be strung around the two knobs on either side of the central hole for carrying.

A cork stopper would have been used to fill both holes. Likely from the Drôme region due to its signature ochre-red color. A rare collector's piece and terrific homage to farm life in the 1800s.
