Rare French “Classe 1926” Wrought-Iron and Copper Honor Board, c. 1926 - 26½" x 32¾"

A rare French commemorative display board inscribed “CLASSE 1926,” probably made for a local conscript association or similar civic society. The glazed case is framed in wood and surrounded by an elaborate structure of hammered wrought iron, with scrolling side elements and raised copper lettering across the top. Behind the glass, individual handwritten paper name labels are arranged against deep green felt beneath headings including Bureau Actif and Membres Actifs. Each label is ingeniously held in place by fine cords, allowing names to be added or changed, while the vitrine opens discreetly from the side. The aged metal, softened copper tones, original paper labels, and gently faded felt are all particularly well preserved.  

In France, "la classe" commonly referred to a generation connected through military conscription, schools and local associations often continued long after service, organizing reunions, dinners, and community events. Boards such as this recorded officers and members of the group, combining a practical function with a strong sense of collective identity. The unusually decorative treatment here, with its hand-worked iron scrolls, copper lettering, and carefully ordered typography, elevates the object well beyond a simple membership list.  

Today, the board reads almost like a piece of graphic folk design. The contrast of dark iron, warm copper, green felt, and rows of handwritten names gives it remarkable visual rhythm, while its generous proportions and architectural frame give it a commanding wall presence. Particularly suited to a hallway, where it can evoke the character of a traditional “wall of fame,” or to a study or library for its subtle scholarly note, it brings history, texture, and a very specific sense of French social life from the interwar period.
