Rare Large Polychrome & Giltwood Sculpture of Saint John the Baptist, Early 18th Century - 37"

A large devotional sculpture of Saint John the Baptist, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, carved in wood and retaining extensive traces of its original polychrome and gilded decoration. The saint is shown with his traditional attributes: the rough garment associated with his life in the wilderness, a long staff terminating in a cross, and the lamb at his feet, symbol of Christ as the Agnus Dei. The carving is particularly expressive, with a gentle turn through the body, deeply modeled drapery, and a contemplative gaze that gives the figure a remarkable sense of movement and emotion. The small reclining lamb is especially appealing, modeled with a touching naturalness beside the saint. The surface shows extensive age-related wear, including a missing hand, paint losses, craquelure, rubbing to the polychrome and gilt surface, and traces of old woodworm activity, all consistent with its considerable age and reinforcing the sculpture’s authentic, timeworn character. 

Saint John the Baptist was one of the most frequently represented figures in Catholic devotional art, immediately recognizable through the cross staff and lamb that refer to his role as the prophet who announced Christ. Here, the large scale, expressive carving, and wonderfully aged surface give the sculpture a presence that is both spiritual and strongly decorative. The softened colors, flashes of old gilding, and accumulated wear lend it extraordinary depth, while the humanity of the saint’s expression and the charm of the lamb prevent the piece from feeling overly formal or austere.
