A generously scaled, French oval baby bathtub in sheet zinc with flared sides, a rolled rim, riveted standing seams, and iron strap handles. The exterior shows an appealing russet and grey oxidized surface, while the interior retains the silvery tone of the zinc with remnants of old white paint at the rim. It is watertight. Portable zinc baths of this type were common household fittings before the spread of indoor plumbing, prized for being lightweight, durable, and easy to clean. Artisans hand formed tôle galvanisée, joining panels with rivets and folded seams, then finishing with a protective rolled edge for strength and comfort in use.
In provincial France such baths served daily tasks from infant bathing to laundry, and their honest surfaces now testify to practical savoir-faire and a century of service. As a decorative piece it brings authentic farmhouse and industrial character to interiors and gardens alike. Use it as a grand ice bucket for entertaining, filled with bottles on a console or trestle table, or as a striking planter or cache-pot for citrus, topiary, or seasonal branches. It also works as a fireside log holder or in a mudroom for towels and throws; when used indoors, add a liner or felt pads to protect surfaces while preserving the beautifully timeworn look.
