A refined and rare pair of French corner cabinets, circa 1810, veneered in deep ebony and topped by shaped white marble slabs. Each cabinet presents a gracefully curved front, the door inset with a Chinese lacquer panel finely painted with gilt landscapes and framed by crisply chased gilt bronze moldings. Fluted uprights, bead detailing, and toupie feet complete the composition, reflecting the precision, restraint, and harmony characteristic of late Neoclassical design.
The gilt bronze mounts are of notably high quality, crisply cast, finely detailed, and beautifully preserved, underscoring the exceptional level of Parisian craftsmanship of the period. While the cabinets do not bear a visible maker’s stamp, their refined construction, choice of materials, and elegant proportions strongly recall the work of leading Parisian cabinetmakers such as Saunier, active at the turn of the 19th century.
The cabinets present a beautifully preserved, timeworn surface overall. The Chinese lacquer panels show gentle rubbing, fine surface marks, and slight softening of the gilt decoration, all consistent with their age, enhancing their authenticity and presence. The ebony veneer and gilt bronze mounts display light wear and mellow patination. Both cabinets retain their keys; one lock operates smoothly while the other is slightly temperamental, a minor and typical nuance in furniture of this age.
Perfectly suited to anchor the corners of a grand dining room, formal salon, or refined entry hall, this exceptional pair introduces a commanding interplay of black lacquer, white marble, and gilt bronze. Their elegant curved fronts soften architectural geometry while maintaining a strong neoclassical presence, and the marble tops provide a distinguished stage for sculpture. Rare in both quality and condition, these cabinets offer a balance of visual authority, craftsmanship, and timeless luxury that elevates both classical interiors and thoughtfully composed contemporary spaces.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
