A striking pair of large-scale painted concrete flamingos from mid-century France, circa 1950s, capturing the whimsical spirit of post-war garden ornament. Handcrafted in solid concrete and originally painted in a soft rose pink with ochre-tipped beaks, these sculptures have a naïve, folk-art quality that contrasts with their imposing presence. Their simple, stylized forms and round, hand-painted eyes add to their playful, artisanal character. Their bodies are set onto slender iron-reinforced legs, a two-part construction typical of garden pieces of this size, and are anchored into moss-covered circular bases, their gracefully curved necks held in elegant, naturalistic poses.
The natural patina is truly beautiful, with a rich growth of moss across the bodies and bases that add depth, texture, and a sense of time passed. Worn paint reveals the concrete beneath in a softly mottled surface. This natural surface wear from outdoor exposure only enhances their character and charm.
These large-scale flamingos bring a touch of playful nostalgia to a courtyard, terrace, or conservatory. Their lush moss patina lends a beautifully organic presence, as if nature itself has gently claimed them, softening their forms and bringing the garden indoors. Equally striking flanking a doorway or nestled among potted palms and ferns, they are a rare find, full of authenticity and character.
