Rare Palissy-Style Earthenware Inkstand with Sphinxes by Thomas Sergent - 13"

A sculptural faience inkstand by Thomas Sergent (1834–1890), late 19th century. The elaborate oval form, conceived as a raised urn on a pedestal base, is fitted with three lidded wells with removable liners, their covers molded as lobed leaves with loop and bud finials. At either end, winged female sphinxes are modeled in the round as if supporting the vessel, while the base is animated by mythical dolphins in high relief. The surface is richly enlivened with layered, freely applied glazes in cobalt, manganese, turquoise, and ochre over a speckled ground. The colors are softly blended and allowed to pool in the recesses, creating nuanced variations in tone and a fluid, painterly effect that enhances the depth of the modeling. Signed T.S. to the underside. Very good condition, with minor enamel chips to high points and a small loss to the tip of one wing. 

Thomas Sergent, a noted Parisian ceramicist active in the second half of the 19th century, was closely associated with the Palissy revival, drawing inspiration from Renaissance and Italian maiolica traditions. His work is distinguished by its sculptural energy, dense ornament, and richly modulated glazes, combining historicist motifs with technical virtuosity. Sergent exhibited internationally and received recognition for his inventive interpretations of Renaissance forms, producing highly decorative objects that bridged art and function.

This inkstand brings sculptural presence and a scholarly note to a desk or writing table. It also lends itself well to cabinet display, where its mythological figures and vivid, flowing glazes create a striking focal point. An excellent addition to a collection of French Palissy ware.
