Espelt's work gained recognition primarily in the 1950s and 1960s, a period when she became a significant figure in mid-century modernist ceramics. Her unique style blended traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics, often featuring intricate patterns and bold colors.
Espelt initially studied at the Escuela Massana in Barcelona, a hub for avant-garde artists and designers. Her early exposure to the thriving artistic community in Barcelona profoundly influenced her approach to ceramics and design.
Espelt crafted her luxurious mirrors often featured handcrafted ceramic tiles for the frames, vibrant glass surfaces, and detailed gold leaf or gold paint accents. Espelt often employed mosaic techniques, assembling small pieces of ceramic and glass into intricate patterns, creating rich textures and depth.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
