A substantial 19th-century artist’s easel crafted in solid oak, distinguished by its impressive scale, clever mechanics and strong atelier presence. Larger and more elaborate than many traditional studio easels, the piece combines sculptural appeal with genuine functionality. The easel features a hand-crank mechanism operating two separate adjustment systems, allowing both the height and inclination of the canvas support to be modified with ease. This practical and well-designed system reflects the quality craftsmanship of the piece.
Its tall architectural silhouette is balanced by elegant cut-out details visible when no painting is displayed, as well as beautifully shaped rear supports, while the aged oak has developed a warm, rich patina over decades of use. The surfaces retain authentic traces of artistic life, adding texture and character to the piece. Despite its generous size and weight, the easel moves easily thanks to its three original castors. Particularly interesting is the adjustable stabilising foot fitted to the fourth leg: operated by a key mechanism, it allows the easel to remain level even on uneven floors, a rare and highly practical feature.
Both decorative and functional, this striking easel would make a wonderful statement piece in an artist’s studio, gallery, library or bohemian interior inspired by the atmosphere of a historic atelier.
