A magnificent pair of 17th-century Italian carved, painted, and giltwood church columns. Each rises from a square plinth with a round base, its spiraling shaft richly adorned with grape clusters, birds, scrolling acanthus leaves, and lively putti, culminating in exuberant Corinthian capitals with pierced foliage. Traces of historic polychromy and water gilding remain across the surfaces, while age cracks, minor losses, worn gilding, and accumulated patina speak to centuries of history. The backs are hollowed and left plain, reflecting their original function as frontal architectural elements within an altar setting.
Demonstrating the extraordinary skill of 17th-century Italian woodcarvers, the columns are sculpted in deep relief, creating a remarkable sense of movement and dimensionality. Their surviving layers of paint and gilding enhance the interplay of light and shadow across the carved surfaces, while the rich patina acquired over centuries lends warmth, character, and authenticity. Both architectural and sculptural, they stand today as striking decorative statements and exceptional examples of period craftsmanship.
Today, they make a dramatic statement flanking a fireplace, doorway, or console table, bringing architectural presence, warmth, and a richly layered sense of history to both classical and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
