This elegant Napoléon III jardinière on stand from the 1870s is crafted in woven willow and conveys a romantic, delicate presence. The oval basket is worked in an airy trellis with a braided rim. The base is crafted with four outward-curving legs that provide balance and stability. Each leg is wrapped in tightly woven wicker and connected by decorative loops and twists, giving the piece a light, airy feel. The central column is also reinforced with a braided pattern, while the intertwining curves and coils create a graceful, almost ribbon-like design. Together, these details make the base both sturdy and highly ornamental. Painted in "blanc de Meudon", a traditional chalk-based white finish prized for its soft, velvety thickness, the surface has mellowed with time, showing weathered paint, small breaks to the wicker, and gentle rubbing at the feet. Its timeworn patina lends a nostalgic and evocative character that heightens its charm.
Originally designed to hold a zinc liner with ferns or palms in a winter garden, the piece embodies the Second Empire taste for naturalistic ornament and fluid profiles. The combination of airy weaving, pale chalk finish, and delicate bindings captures the poetic spirit of late 19th-century French interiors, where such decorative stands softened the transition between architecture and nature.
Today, this jardinière adds a graceful, sculptural accent to interiors. Place it in a sunroom, bay window, or entryway to hold trailing ivy or a dramatic fern, or use it beside a settee or in a bath filled with linens or seasonal greens. Its pale palette and gently worn surface bring warmth and romance, offering a touch of nostalgic French elegance.
