Cloches are often found on the kitchen table and terrace at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells' farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine. In a region where meals move outdoors and windows stay open for months, keeping insects off a ripe cheese or a bowl of figs is a necessity.
Formed from fine, lightweight metal mesh stretched over a gently domed frame, the cloche is finished in a soft, chalky white. A simple ring loop at the crown makes it easy to lift and set aside.
At Chanteduc, where Patricia's cooking and teaching were shaped by the rhythms of the market and the garden, an object like this was in daily use through the long, warm months. It would be equally at home today on a kitchen counter, a garden table or a summer buffet — covering cheese, stone fruit or pastries with the kind of unfussy practicality that Provençal life does so well.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
